My name is Camilla Powell and I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer. I offer face to face psychotherapy, counselling, supervision and bespoke training. I have over 30 years experience as a teacher at Hackney Community College where I taught and mentored refugees. I have been working as an integrative therapist and supervisor for over 20 years; my initial training was in psychosynthesis, training at the London Institute of Psychosynthesis and I enhance my practice with Somatic Experiencing as a licenced somatic experiencing practitioner (SEP).

My approach to therapy is concerned with listening deeply to the individual and responding in a way that values the individual and what they are bringing.

I work using the professional, ethical guidelines of UKCP and BACP.

Why Therapy?

"There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self. Aldous Huxley

Our journey through life provides us with a variety of experiences and we can find ourselves taking many different routes. Many of the routes link us to productive and positive outcomes but sometimes we may experience difficult periods which may involve anxiety, depression and emotional pain. It is during these periods that we may need to contact a professional to support us in finding ways to accept any challenges and find new ways to achieve a sense of purpose and growth.

The psychotherapuetic route offers a safe, professional and confidential space where you can talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, distressing or difficult. Whether there is an issue that arises out of your early life, or something troubling from a situation in the present, therapy provides an environment where you may tell your story and be heard by someone who is an experienced professional who will listen to you with attention, care and depth to enable you to consider your choices for your well being and your future.

Psychotherapy helps you to look inward in order to find greater inner ground and equilibrium and a deeper sense of self. From this place we are more able to engage with the world through meaningful and fulfilling relationships. It may create a space not only for increased emotional well being but also for connection to the spiritual.

Psychotherapy can help you explore, and work through or resolve a wide range of issues including anxieties arising in the past or present, childhood or recent trauma, depression, relationship difficulties, family issues, bereavement, difficulties and stress at work, spiritual crises, and many others. Each person’s context is unique and we will approach it in a way that allows you space and choice.

Working with mind, feelings, body and spirit

In my work I combine the psychotherapy approach with somatic experiencing, unless your choice is to do psychotherapy alone.

Psychosynthesis

"There is no certainty; there is only adventure" Roberto Assagioli

Psychosynthesis offers a holistic approach to living. It works with the mind, feelings, body and spirit and holds the context wherein each of us has the potential to unfold to our deepest sense of identity and purpose.

It is based on the work of Roberto Assagioli who, starting from the time of Freud and Jung, brought a new perspective to the field of psychology. He believed that while our childhood experience affects our present living, we also have within us the vast human potential for healing and change. When we repress this higher potential for wholeness, it can lead to debilitating symptoms, loss of meaning and psychological dis-ease which may add to, and be equal to, the distress arising out of childhood trauma.

In psychosynthesis psychotherapy and counselling we may explore the past in order to heal it and live more fully in the present, and we do this in the context of self discovery.

Painful symptoms of anxiety and depression, and feelings of loss and grief and of being stuck may be a doorway through to a more authentic sense of who we are and who we may be. We may find ourself in touch with an ever increasing capacity to express ourselves through fulfilling relationships, our creativity and connection to our purpose in life.

Psychosynthesis honours the pain and confusion we experience in times of psychological difficulty and crisis, while drawing on our spiritual nature and holding the potential for wholeness and transformation.

Somatic Experiencing

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." Peter Levine

Somatic Experiencing® is a potent approach to physical and psychological symptoms of stress, shock and trauma. It is based on the pioneering work of Dr Peter Levine PhD, the American body psychotherapist, who believes that trauma is primarily a biological physical phenomenon. It works with the body’s natural capacity to self regulate, restoring the natural flow of life energy which has become trapped in our nervous system as a result of trauma or overwhelming experience.

Somatic Experiencing does not focus on talking about or revisiting the traumatic event but on listening to and becoming aware of our moment to moment experience of the body’s ‘felt sense’ or inner sensations and impulses. The work does not have to involve touch or hands on body-work.

Peter Levine developed his theories out of research on observations of animals in the wild. He found that despite being regularly threatened with death, they are rarely traumatised. In animals, the instinct for flight, fight or freeze triggers intense survival energy which they are then able to discharge or release after the threat has passed.

Human beings have the same natural capacity to overcome overwhelming experience but we have an upper rational brain which can cause us to override the primal instinct of our body and the result is that the survival energy gets trapped in our system, leading to all sorts of symptoms which may appear immediately or many years after the event/s.

Somatic Experiencing works to bring about the safe release of symptoms through the discharge of tension and trapped survival energy. This then allows our life energy to flow and enables us to experience a relaxed aliveness in our body and an expanded sense of being.
